What do you mean, "on the PC/Mac side?" Who cares what side it's on? The
RS-232 side would connect to Serial Channel 0 via the internal header in the
Newton, and the USB side (note the first line of the PDF is "Full Compliance
with the USB 1.1 specification) would be soldered to a B-type male USB port.
That way you wouldn't have to worry about whether or not you put your
USB->Serial thingy in your bag: all you would need is a normal USB A<->B
cable, which are pretty much everywhere by now, and certainly smaller than the
non-cable-embedded adapters (like the Belkin, which I own).

Certainly it would be easier to just buy a cable, but then you would still
have to plug it in via the interconnect dongle, or SER-001. And the SER-001
provides a miniDIN-8 port, and all the USB->Serial cable-type adaptors I've
ever seen only have DB-9 PC-style connectors, so you'd have to use a Newton
serial cable as well. With the USB adaptor embedded, it would already be
wired as if it was a Newton serial cable.
