Yeah the Alphasmarts are definitely ugly, clunky little things.
However, I taught junior high English in California for ten years, and
during some of the really horrible education budget years, they were
pretty much all we could afford.
I had a pretty nice writer's workshop going with 10 Alphasmarts,
1LCIII, and a laserprinter. Sure, there was a waiting list to edit and
print, but using an Alphasmart was a huge motivator in the days when
about 2 of my 35 students had a computer at home. And the batteries
lasted forever.
Fortunately, eBay came along, and I soon had a "beautiful" network of
10 various Mac II models all AppleTalked together. Oh, those were the
days!
