In principle this is perfectly ok,
but I am not sure what the reading is in case you put a real alkaline in...

I checked what happens if you remove the battery while beeing on the power
adaptor:
it seems that the temperature reading is then copied from the display
temperature - you see exactly the same values.
If you have a NiCd pack in the readings should slightly differ (+/- 1
dgree)between ambient (which is the display) and battery temp.

So your problem seems to be due to bad contacts.
