Re: [NTLK] How do you use your Newton?

I'm unfortunately using my Newton 2100 less than I should, because I
found doing certain things on it to be too much of a pain. So perhaps
a related question is where have you tried to use your Newton and not
succeeded. :-) (Although I don't want to sound overly negative--but
getting your Newton to fulfill its promise as an uber-PDA can take a
lot of time and work.)

What I do use the Newton for:
--Notes. My biggest use of the Newton, by far. I keep all sorts of
Notes in it for my work, lists, personal stuff, idea sketches, etc.
--Names.
--NewtWorks. I write books, and I can download a Nisus Writer or an
RTF file for an entire book (500 page manuscript) into
NewtWorks--which means I can have my current manuscript with me at
all times, in an editable form. I haven't done much editing on my
books this way, but have done a bit more with short stories loaded on
the Newton.
--VoiceNotes Lite. I like having the Newton act as a voice recorder
when I don't feel like writing.
--Lextionary.
--just starting to investigate FilePad, not sure yet how I might use it.

Trying again to use the Newton for:
--To Do lists. I use Adam Tow's NewtToDo, which is a very nice
program, but I'd like to be able to make the ToDos entered in it
appear on Dates. This may be possible, I just haven't figured it out
yet.
--Dates. Not so much for this, as I tend to use my old Handspring
more for that; it's vastly easier to do the sync with Palm Desktop.

Never could get my Newton to work with:
--email and web. I couldn't get SimpleMail to work with my ISP and
couldn't get NetHopper to work consistently. But since I'm not out
from my office much, this wasn't critical to me. It's just that I
bought a Newton thinking, great, I can check email and visit web
sites, but getting it to work on my Newton was apparently going to
take more time than I was willing to devote.
--Palm Desktop Synchronization. Despite suggestions from many kind
listers here, I never could get Claris Organizer to work with my
Newton. The old desktop caused problems with my iMac running OS 9.2.2
and having Palm 4 Desktop installed as well. And it seems that
keeping your data intact is continually problematic once you do get
Palm-syncing with a Newton to work (this is mentioned by other
listers in the archives). I'm not on OS X yet, so can't use nSync,
but to me this is the biggest single drawback of the Newton, not
being able to sync easily with a desktop calendar in OS 9.

That aside, it's a great machine and good luck with your new Newton.
If your friends think it's an oversized PDA, tell them it's a
smaller, sleeker TabletPC.

Best,
Jeff
