does your Newton see other cards (memory or other modems) OK? I don't
think I've come across a PCMCIA modem yet (apart from the Winmodems) that
the Newton can't see as a communications card (no additional software
required). You could try doing a reset (remove all cards and press the reset
button on the back of the Newt) then try the modem card again and see if the
problem persists.
