Actually, it is the other way around. When Apple was first developing the
Newton, they hired Paragraph to write the HWR for it. This was later sold by
Paragraph to other manufacturers. When Apple came out with Newton OS 2.0,
they had written their own printed recognizer that supplemented the cursive
recognizer that Paragraph wrote.
Unfortunately, it seems that, while the engine from Paragraph is the same,
the other elements that exist on the Newton--correction, gestures, etc. are
lacking in the non-Newton implementations. For sure, this is a major, major
lack, in my opinion.
