There is one thing to be taken care of:
this is the pin allocation of Rx/Tx and handshake signals.
The definition of the RS-232 is a bit strange in that respect, because the
pin allocation of the signals is dependent on the device.
There are different allocations for Data Communication Equipment (DCE, i.e.
modems)and
Data Terminal Equipment (DTE, i.e. computers).
The allocation is such that you can use a 1:1 wired cable to connect a DTE
with a DCE.
This implies that connecting DCE to DCE (PC to PC or PC to Newt) requires a
crossing of Rx/Tx signals and handshake signals (if used).
If you use a USB to serial converter, that shall provide a standard PC
serial interface.
Thus if you want to connect your Newt you use the standard (crossed) Newt to
PC cable.
In terms of speed there is the following ranking from slowest to fastest:
- serial (direct or via USB to serial adapter)
- LocalTalk via PhoneNet or the special LocalTalk Cable
(requires a serial modem or printer port on your Mac)
- this is proximately the same in terms of speed with using Ethernet and an
Ether to Localtalk Bridge, connecting your Newt via LocalTalk to the Bridge
- unpreceeded fastest is the Ethernet connection using a (wireless) Ethernet
card in the Newt
Cheers
Johannes
