No this is wrong. You do NOT need a modem at all for any of the serial
adapters to work... You only need the adapter and the proper drivers
(OS9 or OSX) and proper configuration...

There is no case I have ever seen where a modem is needed, other then
the Geethree which uses the cable and bracket from the modem only...
