While Mr. Gates is pretty Machiavellian, he's kept the Gates
Foundation clean. I've had to explain to ex-New Yorkers who moved
out here that Gates didn't create it just to get good publicity to
distract from Microsoft's bad rep: since his family is wealthy he
knew Eddie Carlson, the city's major charity mover and shaker, when
he was growing up and in early interviews whenever the subject of
what he wanted to do when he retired came up he said he wanted to
work with charities like Carlson did.
