Nope bunkie, and I'll type this slowly so's you'll get it; anyone who makes
an unique design - such as the original eMate memory board which someone
claims to have 'copied' - has a copyright protection. There's no
registration nor form to fill out, it is copyrighted the moment they make it
as a fixed work. Heck, even this email is automatically copyrighted by me as
I write it. Even that last sentence. Even this one.
To copy or duplicate or clone someone else's work is illegal, certainly
unethical, and - coming from someone who has had his work 'appropriated' -
just 'no cool'.
If someone - such as PCBman - makes a new design that has the same function
as the original eMate board, but is different from the original; this is not
a copyright violation. Repeat, this is not a copyright violation.
It could be - depending on the details of the design - a patent violation,
but I have never seen any patent info on the 3rd party eMate memory boards
at the USPTO, so I would venture in my professional opinion the PBCman has
not infringed on any patent.
So, in summary: copy - is bad. Bad! Original design - is good. Good!
