Maybe. I've never seen this problem so far.

Definitely not.

If you can't get that thing replaced, I could send you a backlight
or a LCD unit to try things out with for the cost of shipping (around
4...8 USD I think). That way you should be
easily able to figure out what needs to be replaced. If you can fix
the unit with what I sent, we'll certainly be able to work something
out, otherwise just send it back.

Good. If you find out the problem is in the display unit, just marry
your Newton's digitizer to the unit I'd send.
