The 3C589 has been around in different variants since before 1998, if I recall correctly, so I don't find it surprising that it's one of the better supported cards under windows. I've used one successfully with Linux and BEOS as well as as my newt (the x-jack variant) so it must be a close to a "generic" card as you can get :)
