I believe you should have NIE installed + the NI ethernet module.
Next you should create a dedicated set-up using internet setup.
There you can set:

configuration method (manual or DHCP server - i use manual)
card (I have the 3com 3c589d)
subnet mask (that shall match to your router settings)
local IP address (that shall match into your routers address range)
Gateway/Router address (put your routers address here)
primary DNS
Domain name

Having done this (provided your Ethernet card is properly installed) should
give you access to the internet and to your Email account as well.
