You definitely get more speed, but also you get more compatibility.
With ethernet you can use newtsync or Escale from OSX as well as NCU or
anything that needs appletalk. For example I can connect to the
internet via my ethernet card (or wirelessly) I can download my mail
and my newsgroups (with inkspot) and I can browse using courier or
Newtscape...
I can also print to my network connected laserprinter via Appletalk.
