Well, I use a PC serial to Newton Interconnect cable, not a dongle, so the
mini-DIN serial add-on would not be helpful. I just recently found out how
to beam protected packages so I will probably just load packages on the
eMate then beam them over to my MP and vice versa. Thanks for your help.

It could be possible that the Interconnect port of your MP2100 is
somehow broken, these have very small solder connections. Due to the
attaching and detaching of the connector these may become loose after
some time...
If this is really the case you could order a SER-001 from PCBman which
provides an internal serial port.
