I have been using nothing but CF cards in my Newton. One of the first things
I did after ordering the unit was to order a 256MB CF card and PC Card
adaptor from Expansys (very good prices in case anyone is interested). I
agree that they do tend to write slowly, but no more slowly than writing to
my Clie's MS. I would say that they (well at least mine) are prone to weird
error messages when working on a document from the card. It normally means a
quick re-set or just acknowledging the error message is enough. However I
have had to re-format (or whatever the Newt equivalent of this is) a couple
of times when the thing just crashed and wouldn't respond. It seems to be
the larger files - big reports or Merlin dictionaries and books that cause
the problems, though this might just be an unrelated issue. I have run all
the tests that you can and it passed them all except a 'bad sector' that it
seemed to fix. The card is current partitioned into 4. Not really sure if
that is what you are supposed to do with them or not to be honest.
I would think about getting a large linear card if I could find one - say a
32MB one and perhaps use my CF card as a back-up store only. I think that
way I would get a reasonable amount of useable storage to work from and have
a bigger back-up card when needed.
Generally the Newt with the large amount of storage offered by the CF card
is a viable replacement for the PB on many occasions. I also plan to get a
Nexio in the next few weeks and compare the 2. In many ways that Nexio is
the only other PDA that comes close to the Newt's functionality. Perhaps the
forthcoming oQo may also prove interesting.

Regards

Dave
