At the risk of taking this off on another (OT) tangent, I disagree. For arguments sake, lets say you are going to spend 5000 of your "bucks" on a "single source" system, then I would put down around 3000 on the turntable or the CD player (more likely a transport and a DAC at this price) and then maybe about 1000 each on Amp and Speakers. Its very easy to verify that this is a good general approach. In an audtion at a dealer, you will (generally) notice a bigger difference between:
Sys A: 1000 dollar amp
1000 dollar speakers
1000 dollar CD player or turntable
and
Sys B: 1000 dollar amp
1000 dollar speakers
3000 dollar CD player or turntable
than you would between
Sys A: 1000 dollar amp
1000 dollar speakers
1000 dollar CD player or turntable
and
Sys C: 2000 dollar amp
2000 dollar speakers
1000 dollar CD player or turntable
or
Sys D: 3000 dollar amp
1000 dollar speakers
1000 dollar CD player or turntable
or
Sys F: 1000 dollar amp
3000 dollar speakers
1000 dollar CD player or turntable
There will, of course, be exceptions if badly matched components come into play.
