The Newton has been dropped once or twice. I opened it and had a look,
and the ROM board is securely seated. Just to be sure, I took it out
and put it back in again. The barest edge of the contacts is just
visible, and the two locks are secure.

I haven't lifted the main board out of the casing (not feeling that
ambitious yet), but the visible portion appears to be intact.

Apparently due to one time when it fell on the corner, the rod holding
the spring was pushed out of its hole, and held the battery casing
shell open a little bit. I just noticed this, comparing it to a picture
from a site showing Newton disassembly, and moved the rod back into
position. Since it was dropped that time, the ejector has never worked
properly, only pushing the battery out barely a millimeter. Although
I've pushed that rod back where it belongs, the ejection is still the
same.

Also, I just realized that the Newton goes through the reset when a
battery is ejected and reinserted, even if it's just for a second.

It seems that whatever it was that was keeping a short-term memory for
it, a sort of Newton PRAM, is not working - at least, that's how I
interpret it. Does this sound like an accurate assessment, and if so,
what is the likely cause/solution?

Thanks
