Hello Everyone:
Boy, that was a lot of work!
I managed to implement the hinge/washer repair on another eMate. This
particular eMate must have been cursed:
I accidentally unscrewed a tiny screw that holds the PCMCIA mechanism to the
motherboard. Luckily, I found the tiny nut for the mechanism and reattached
the screw.
I got the unit put back together, but some commands, including the backlight,
would not function. Had to take her apart again to double-check the ribbon
cable connections. It worked fine after that.
Stripped one of the Torq 8 screws on the back, but it seems to respond to a
Torq 10 bit now.
Accidentally pulled off one of the spring-loaded card slot doors. That
spring is very tiny. I used hemostats to get it back into place, although the
procedure did require removing the screw that holds the ovalized piece in place.
Finally, everything was put back properly, and I powered the eMate up. No
problems.
I decided to try re-installing the Newer Technology (or whatever the Hell
it's called) memory upgrade card. Disconnected the battery, installed the card,
put it all back together. I held down the reset button for a bit, while
holding down the power key. A dialog box appeared, asking me if I wanted to delete
all data. I said, "Sure". After that, the unit appeared to shut off. I did
this several times, always getting the same dialog box to appear. Sometimes I
chose "Yes"; sometimes I chose "No". Did not seem to make a difference. I
guess the upgrade card is hosed up. I'll have to save my pennies for another
one.
I removed the non-working memory upgrade card, and the unit still works fine
in that configuration.
