I do not know about the adapter. It is a noname one. But it connects
with my mobile phone.

I had installed the usb2serial drivers. Maybe that is the answer. THe
driver is the prolificUSBserialOSX.

Well the Irda is in fact a serial port in a way..so it makes some sense.
