Hi Grant. Nice story! Welcome back to the green.

There are specific cards which will work. The list is posted at
http://www.ff.iij4u.or.jp/~ngc/eng/newtwave.htm. I don't believe the
Sonnet is listed, but if it's based on the PRISM chipset (or a licensed
Lucent/Agere card) it may work. Note the warnings about 3.3v cards.

Also, check out the WikiWikiNewt entries for wireless support:

newtSync exists and works for some, although there are issues as
described in the list archives. The developer has moved on to other
things, as well. It's downloadable from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/newtsync/

Not sure about this, but there's been a bunch of discussion in the past
few months. Archives might be the best bet.

You'll need ATA Support (http://www.kallisys.com/newton/ata/en) to use
non-linear storage cards.

Check out Nitro (http://www.40hz.org/Nitro/). I haven't used it
personally but there are discussions in the archive of those who have.

Webmail isn't a good option because of the complex HTML and JavaScript
usually used on these sites. SimpleMail is the best solution for POP3
e-mail (http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/road/aah66/), and its
companion, Mail V (http://www.newtonmail.dsl.pipex.com/)is for IMAP.

Not at all! But it is limited and doesn't support secure servers or much
layout. The three commonly used browsers are NewtsCape
(http://home.comcast.net/~saweyer/newton/newtscape.htm), Courier
(http://www.40hz.org/Courier/) and Nethopper
(http://www.unna.org/unna/internet/web-browsers/NetHopper3.2).

Best regards--
