I would love to see a "beaming" desktop application that would allow us to
initiate a connection with someone on a sort of trusted "buddy list".

You'd click on a mini icon next to the person's name, point your Newton at
your computer's IrDA port, beam a package (or notes, or whatever), and
then the person on the other end would receive it on their Newton. This
would essentially turn the internet into a bridge between two Newtons
locked in a typical beaming session. Add-on infrared ports are typically
cheap too.

The computer app could buffer the data in order to save the Newton's
battery life, then send it and zap it to the receiving Newton. If that
would be too complicated to manage, then you fool the Newton into thinking
it really has an active dialogue with another Newton via infrared, but
somehow force it to maintain the connection despite poor latency.

An added benefit would be the Instant Messaging feature of the desktop
application for chatting with each other and seeing who's online. Imagine
how easily this would make sharing Newton data & notes with various
Newtontalk friends. Suddenly your Newton becomes a P2P device.
