PDFs created in the right way are usually small and can be downloaded
on demand (if server supports).
Don't know how the compare in size with newton books.

AMOF the free Reader 6 can export as plain text by default (if the PDF
security was set to let one export the contents of the file).

The problem here is that any file (.pdf, .doc, .jpg, .html) that will
be read on a PDA should be created with a PDA screen in mind. The
original file should be tagged and had it's images compressed/resized
prior to the PDF export. Even Adobe's Palm PDF Reader's

Running in a newton probably, but I tested some tagged PDFs with images
with old Palms that usually rendered/reflowed acceptably.
