Well you see, the neighborhood I moved into requires
everybody to have high-speed internet. It's part of
the HOA package. My HOA fee includes phone, high-speed
internet, basic cable and trash pickup. All this for
the low-low price of $279/month! But I have a static
IP so I pay $10 more per month. Yeah, I choked too
when I saw that, but when I compared that to what I
was paying seperatly? Well, it came up about even!
Plus, I get community services. Pool, clubhouse and
tennis...so, it's worth it.
The cable/phone/internet is supplied by a company
called OpenBand. They only serve three communities in
eastern Loudoun county in Virginia. Ashburn (which
includes Ashbrook, and Ashburn Farms) Broadlands and
Lansdowne. They purchase connectivity through
MCI...and since I used to work there, I know that they
have excellent SLAs on latency for internet!(the
internet devision is still UUNET, thankfully!)
I haven't fully clocked my connectivity, but I have
hit as high as 50mbps...I'm sure I've gone faster, but
it's tough to find someplace with an open pipe fast
enough to test against! My ISP said that since I'm not
going through their firewall, (I have an IP outside
the internal netblock) that I'm not being throttled at
all. And since the community is so new, they don't
really monitor throughput, so unless I begin to abuse
(part of the AUP I signed) the service, there is
nothing restricting me from anything up to 100mbps.
Makes me want to upgrade my wireless 802.11b to dual
802.11G! but I can't justify the cost. And I still
have older 802.11b legacy devices that will bump the
speed back to 802.11b anyway.
As for MS-IIS? Well that's no april fools joke. I do
this for a living and know the service inside and out.
As long as you use common sense and perform some basic
security, it is very secure and extremly fast. and it
works...
