As I wrote already:

8 alkalines in series would mean 12V !!!
8 rechargeables would mean at least 9.6V !!

NEVER apply such voltages directly to your Newt!
With 9.6V and without recharging you might still be lucky that your Newt
survives, but definitely not at 12V!!!
