I've had a quick look and I can't get it to compile on Debian Sarge either.

Looking at the output of make and a quick glance at the source, I think
the problem is that the code is archaic and so the modern gcc has
trouble compiling it. You could try installing gcc 2.95 and using that
to compile with instead. I would do that on test box though as I'm not
sure what happens when you have two different versions of gcc installed
- google is probably your friend here.
