Well, tablets remain a vertical market and pdas a bare bones operation.
The Pepper developers are claiming a niche for their product as a
digital storage and display device with built in wireless connectivity.
Amazon lists it with portable digital video devices, but it can do
more. With the wireless connection comes easy web surfing and sharing.
The developers are marketing the pad to broadband providers as
something to be handed out with the service.
Pepper seems to be going with the idea that individual operating
systems and computers will become less important as web based
applications take over (something Microsoft both fears and embraces).
They have an interesting enthusiasm for open source creation, or at
least collaboration--they aren't providing a comprehensive suite of
apps, they're suggesting that other people do what they want with it.
It's my personal candidate for migration of the os because I like the
screen real estate (although the new clie screen IIRC is larger by 1").
Cell phones as web or address book devices leave me confused (I'm just
not a japanese schoolgirl), and I don't need a sub-laptop when I have a
full one for doing laptop things. The pad has a lot of features I
covet for an auxillary device. I bought an eyeTV last year and I have
a lot of tv shows that could travel with me (well, about 10 of them on
its' 20g hard drive).
It could become successful, or follow the path of the Newt and go out
of production, leaving behind an ardent band of enthusiasts. Of course
it could prove to be a great newton platform then go out of business,
which would be funny but not humorous.
