Yes the 2x00 newtons are quite different from the 1x0 newtons.
More ram/storage, a MUCH faster processor, larger screen, 16 shades
of gray
2 pcmcia slots etc.
Yes newtons can get online. Newton OS 2 can use the suite of packages
referred to as "Newton Internet Enabler" to use modems, serial ppp
connections, ethernet PC cards (and with the right 3rd party drivers
bluetooth or wifi cards) to access the internet.
Unfortunately I don't believe that the 110 ever supported NIE,
without NIE you don't have a chance of getting web access.
NIE 1.1 gets you serial / dialup and works on the 120 and all later
newtons, NIE 2.0 gets you ethernet (and by extension, wifi) support,
but requires an NOS 2.1 newton (emate. 2000 or 2100)
Newtscape is the most feature rich web-broswer for NOS 2 newtons,
with many tools for making eBooks out of online content etc. Courier
is probably the fastest newton browser out there, but really only
yeilds the text of the website, no images and little formatting.
There are various other tools for the newton to use on networks:
pt100 gives you telnet over serial, dialup or tcpip, newtWeather can
give you current weather updates for major US Cities, MailV gives you
comprehensive pop / imap email, theres a couple of tools for
bloggers, and even a VNC viewer / server.
So yes - newtons can do nifty things online, but IIRC you had a mp110
- which won't cut it :( The 2100 is the most capable newton apple
ever sold, and depending on what condition it is in I could see
paying between 75 and 150 dollars on one, more if it comes with
extras like the external keyboard, carrying case, memory cards,
ethernet / wifi / serial / modem cards etc, less if its just a bare-
bones system or is scratched up.
