I think the emate has a sad old bug that makes it unreliable in this
way. Stephanie Mak (sp?) back in the day, suggested this is due to the
lid off switch not working exactly right. You can try using the power
button instead of just closing the lid. In fact her website had
instructions for disabling the lid switch entirely, although it's not
clear to me whether this fixes it or not.

I have had a couple of emates and they both suffered from this
unreliable power issue, which no other Newton I have owned ever had any
hint of.

Try turning them off from the power button instead of just closing the
lid. Kind of a bummer I know.
