You could probably leave it without a battery for a year and not lose
any data or force a brainwipe.
The only way i know other than the one you tried is to start it with a
different ROM card such as an eMate card.
Did your port cover recently break? It is possible to have the
digitizer ribbon cut by it. If this is the case or if the digitizer
contacts are loose or dirty you will need to remove the logicboard to
check
