As an extra hint on all the renewed talk about GPS Map, I've bookmarked
the following service for when I actually get GPS Map working on my
Newt. If you're interested in creating maps for GPS Map, you should
check it out.
You can sign up for free and play around a little. But...for $30/year
you can create your own, customized, topographical maps, plus have
direct (downloadable) access to USGS topo scans and photo maps.
I'm waiting until I'm a little closer to getting my GPS software
working before I sign up. It sounds like a good deal, at least for a
year GPS Map experimentation.
