[NTLK] Best Nicad Battery Cleanup procedure?

Hi all,
I have a 130 and the nicads have started to leak. It is only on the
contacts (crystals around the battery tops and on the contacts) and no
damage to the Newt itself. However I want to know if I should use any
type of cleaner other than water to clean the contacts? I know with
alkaline it is best to use vinegar to neutralize the chemicals as well
as clean it. But what is best for cleaning up nicads? I know that
nicads are toxic and to avoid contact (I will be using rubber gloves as
a precaution). But is there anything else I should know about cleanup?
  Thanks in advance.
