A dead backup battery should not prevent your Newton from "awakening".=20=
In such cases, the unit powers up as usual, but displays a window=20
telling you the battery is dead.
My guess would be: 1/ contrast slider turned all the way down (good=20
news); or 2/ dead screen (bad news).
