Awhile back a group of us bought Newtons from a guy in Florida that
exhibited a similar problem. Here's a link to the MARC archive thread:

Try horizontal lines to see if the pen tracking diverges as you move
across the screen. Do it in portrait and landscape modes. For
whatever reason we all found the problem at the bottom (Apple-logo
side). If nothing else you may be a feel for how far off the line is
and attempt to compensate when you're tapping.
Sadly, there was no solution found short of replacing the touch-screen.
