Here are some good solid websites that are geared for hardware. It's a good
place to immerse yourself, think about a build, and then plan it. Best thing
is like many others here have suggested, this is hands on, but only after
you learn enough to know some of the things not to do...
I have a BS/ISM, but basically I earned that through 15 years of building
boxes, installing LAN's, building specialty boxes. This all made the formal
education almost a joke. There were many times that I knew more than the
subject being taught, but many times I learned much from the Prof's as well.
Kind of like the mortar in the bricks.
Right now I have 10 x 10k Barracuda's, an Adaptec 2100S, and some assorted
other goodies waiting to go into my next gaming machine. I've found my case
and power supplies, all that's left is the MB/Processor, cooling system,
graphic adapters and a nice sound card. Building raid arrays is now a hobby,
most IT guys don't even know what the levels are, much less how to build
them. If you ever get this itch, try this book; Redundant Disk Arrays by
Gibson published by The MIT Press, 9 780262 071420 ISBN. This is a
dissertation, so a good book to cuddle up with in bed.
Oh, something else, make sure to hit your local garage sales and buy as many
boxes as you can with older Win OR Mac OS's. Try to get one of each
version. Then after you rehab them, making sure to keep period correct, try
to get them all connected on a local area network. When you've got that
figured out, then add the other platform to the mix. This will keep you busy
for quite some time, but you'll learn a hell of a lot.
Best Regards,
Paul Curtis
