Tinker with stuff incessantly. Get broken hardware which is readily
available and fix it. Figure out how to make screwed up stuff work
right again. Don't accept failure and don't get so angry you smash
stuff.

This is a life long pursuit. The above is the recognized method to
competence. People who think they can read a book and then do it as a
job (teching PC's that is) are never going to be competent.

It's an obsession really, as the hardware and software change daily, it
has to be if you want to be any good at it...
