Andy,

As the backlight gets older its brightness decreases. This can vary
greatly among Newts depending on how much the backlight has been used.

The first MessagePad 2000 that I purchased was in such poor condition
that the backlight was barely visible even in a pitch black room,
whereas the next unit I purchased had a strong bright backlight which
is clearly visible in normal lighting.

There are several web pages with information about the backlight as
well as some example pictures to show a good backlight for reference.

Check out http://www.pda-soft.de/2x00backlightreplacement.html

As for the email addresses, they are formatted like that to prevent
spam robots from harvesting people's addresses. The spam systems
cannot determine that it's an actual address when it is spelled out
with "at" and "dot".

Regards,
Korbin
