Hello Gaudo, hello list,
I think the Newton is great to do field work (i.e. in the library), or
typing simple texts that may be exported to the desktop Mac or PC by e-
mail or NCU.
However, when it comes to writing a thesis with footnotes, tables, index
and summary and so on, I simply must admit the superiority of a 'normal'
laptop in the first place, and of Microsoft Word in the second place.
I hate to say it. I started my thesis with AppleWorks (well, ClarisWorks
back then), and it is a wonderful program : simple yet powerful. But,
although it's footnotes are fine, it has no table or index generating
capabilities. And Word has.
I bought iWork, and Pages is fine, but no index or summary generation
here neither. So, in the end, I started using Word on my PowerBook. The
integration of EndNote is nice too.
My MessagePad is very useful to take notes and write down student
assessments on the go, and then FileMaker, AppleWorks and Word process
the informations I mailed to my PowerBook from my MessagePad.
So, maybe consider letting pragmatic views prevail on the attachment to
the Newton. Use it were it's good at; that's not complex text processing,
in my opinion.
Best regards,
Andreas
