Yes, the Newton fonts aren't the best choice for a desktop system.
That's one of really just a few largish things left to correct before
it'll become (IMHO) a fairly comfortable reading environment. It'll
get there.

Specifically it uses a fair amount of XUL (driven by JavaScript) for
windows and controls, with RDF for some back-end stuff. The actual
rendering is handled by CSS. At some point in the future I may
consider upgrading to a more XML-based rendering system like XSL-FO,
but for now CSS is a little easier to work with / better supported.
