Matthew, thanks for your comprehensive response,

*sigh* that's too bad. xpdf can do this, so I suppose it's possible.
Thanks for the link to the image based pdf viewer. I'll d/l that as soon
as I get the 2100 bootstrapped.

 again, thanks!

I'd pay the price for a new unit like the Nokia 770 or that Q1 that was
featured on /. (that article got me to buy the Newton 2100 on a whim) --
IF -- they had the battery life. And let me manipulate text the way I
need. I mean, I need this as a research tool and not to play games or
watch movies.

  [more links and more thanks]

BTW: I notice you're from Harvard. Question: have you successfully
authenticated against the Harvard WiFi network using your newton? I'm at
Harvard Extension and bought this thing to take class notes, read class
materials, and to take notes in the library. I need pdf support because my
profs regularly assign material they post as pdfs on their web pages.

BTW: Two things I know it won't do but which I wish it did:

   * built in camera. Point camera at text on a newspaper or book. Snap
picture. Use pen to block out areas on the page that contain images or
graphs. Background OCR then converts page images to text. **perfect for
research at a library**

   * MathML and Math input support. Use pen to input an equation. Software
recognizes and automatically outputs MathML for display on a web page or
input to a Mathematica kernel. Integrate in with spreadsheet to link
variables to a dataset and let the machine crunch a solution. Big plus if
it automatically transfers heavy number crunching to a fast machine across
the net and reports results back to the handheld seamlessly.

Yeah, I know - I'm dreaming. But I shouldn't be. These strike me as
*obvious* applications for a handheld. Perhaps I see it this way simply
because that's what *I* need from the device. But I can't be alone.

*sigh*

Again, thanks muchly for your reply and help!
