Welcome.
1- I use the rechargeables with no problem; many folks do. (Of
course, sorry to be obvious, their recharge is not possible in the
Newton.)
2a- "Chicken-&-egg" is "bootstrapping, and is well covered in the
wiki pages
2b- There are some folks who are willing to loan you a card with
drivers installed.
2c- If your iMac has IRDA, then you can use that to beam packages
from OS9 (maybe Classic) with the appropriate program installed on
the Mac (sorry, I forget the name - search the UNNA site).
