The issue is that (I belive) this setup only works with a Serial
connection. And most new cameras are USB...

Guys.. guys.. it's called GET A CAMERA WITH A LCD SCREEN AND LARGE REMOVEABLE MEDIA.
Why on Earth would you want to hook a camera to a Newton anyway? To see things in crystal green and black clarity? It's just like making a Newton a MP3 player.. it really is not the best hardware for the "mission statement".
What does Newton do well? It's awesome form factor for E-Books for one. :)
If you want to get pictures on a Newton, let me suggest the way Newt's Cape will convert those for you, and all you need is a internet connection. (modem or ethernet)
