Ditto.
Discovered all this the hard way a long time ago.
I don't know any way to configure Safari to download packages as
"binary" vs. the "text" that you experience.
Now I use OmniWeb, or FireFox, or Opera as a workaround.
You can read more about the Binary vs. Text settings on UNNA.
