I am sorry to hear this and very disappointed.
If efforts have moved onto new projects and you are writing to tell
us that resources and interest has changed - I can respect that.
However, I am greatly confused and nearly offended by the notion that
rather out-of-the-blue "the community has not supported us and some
other developer is trying their own thing without consulting us or
our body of work so far."
The Newton Community is not a massive group of programmers, most of
us do not know code from bad english. I have watched the development
of the DCL now for close to four years, I have attempted to use it on
many occasions - at some points in its development with great
success. From time to time I e-mailed back and forth with you very
briefly with questions about it. Personally I have never spoken
negatively about it or complained about it.
What became clear to me from the brief comments you shared with me
via e-mail some long time back, and has been reinforced by comments
made by the developing group on this list - is that DCL was a very
comprehensive, very ambitious project meant to completely replace the
Newton Connection Utilities in a production environment. It was also
clear that it wasn't done yet. So myself and others have waited,
trying it from time to time. Many posting positive feedback to
NewtonTalk. Many also posting "what do I do when this doesn't work
for me" questions - because that is the nature of this mailing list.
If the nature of the Newton Community has been upsetting you and / or
the other developers of DCL so long as to bring on the letter you
have just written us - why, I must ask, is this our first notice? As
a member of this community why are you just telling us now when there
is no going back? And lastly, what is it that we as a community have
done wrong? How could we correct this yet unknown offense?
I am very sad to hear of the general closing of the DCL project. I
have seen other projects close on this list with similar sentiment,
also giving no real warning or explanation and all I can say is that
it hurts the users and the platform very directly. The achievement of
your efforts will be greatly missed.
