I have the subtle feeling that I am going to provide some pure
amusement to several people. Still I will proceed.
I manage to connect a PowerBook G4 with 10.3.9 to a 2100 either with an
Ethernet cable or with a serial one and a Keyspan adapter. Actually I
have been adopting the Keyspan solution only recently: I think that,
speed apart, it is much more handy and energy-saving so I am trying to
migrate all my Ethernet connectivity solutions to serial.
Now, through Ethernet I can set the PowerBook as server (web sharing
on) and with NewtsCape I can retrieve both packages and html files
(eventually to be saved to Newtworks or as packages). With Ethernet I
set the PowerBook port IP to the usual 192.168.0.1 and I connect though
Dock TCP/IP with the Newton set to 192.168.0.2.
With serial, I have no idea on how to configure the connection; I mean
I have many ideas about it but so far none of them worked. Basically,
when NewtsCape asks for connection, I use an Internet Setup with the
serial port while the PB is supposed to be listening through the serial
port. I have been trying numerous combinations of settings in the
Newton and in the PowerBook (manual/server, various speeds, various
IPs, internet sharing, etc) but NewtsCape always hangs on "NIE
Connecting" without going any further.
As it is clear, I am not very strong on networks in terms of settings,
protocols and hardware and my search on the list did not bring any
satisfactory result.
So: I will highly welcome and appreciate any guidance on the requested
configuration to "use NewtsCape over a serial connection to OS X".
In case all this is obviously and technically not feasible, I hope you
had fun and thanks for informing me on the abyss of my ignorance.
Regards to everybody,
Giulio
