I'm probably using the wrong geekspeek here. When no SSID is specified, the "Newton" doesn't pickup the SSID, per se. However, that is a primary function of the Wifi card, to connect to the first available SSID that it can find being broadcasted.
Of course, unless the Wifi driver actually queries the card, which (I believe) the Newton does not, you'll never know what SSID you have connected to.
