Well, serial would be the first step. IR would then flow from that (I only
have a MP120 at the moment, so it would be the odd dialect of IR that
supports.) When I get a 2100 (looks to be in the new year now) I would
consider doing TCP/IP etc.
I just "sniffed" the serial protocol, and saw some things I expected from my
brief, brief look at the serial protocol spec, so I do think it's do-able.
Personally, I think this is how it would happen: I write the basic synch
mechanism (including sync to Outlook etc), produce an open interface to
write plug-ins for other protocols, other people write the missing protocols
(if they think they'd like to.) I charge a nominal amount for the basic
"serial" package ($5 - $10) and then I charge an extra amount for the
plug-ins I write (e.g. IR) of, say, $5 a piece. The other developers are
welcome to do whatever they like cost-wise with their own work. This would
be a one off charge per individual. You'd not have to buy anything again for
any extra Newtons, but I might choose to charge an upgrade fee for newer
versions in the future.
Before the final release, a time limited BETA would be released for free.
This would work for 30 days (or something like that) and then require a new
version.
Something like that ;-)
