Sam...
Several experiments have been done with overclocking Newts in the years gone by...One such expirement determined that overclocking beyond a 5mHz crystal would lead to an unstable system and possible corrupt soups.
be aware though, that when you overclock a Newt, some of the accessories will no longer work, like the keyboard for one...It was discovered that there is a crystal in the keyboard that will also need to be overclocked...

But to answer your main question, yes...it's just a matter of removing the old crystal and replaceing with a new one.
A former member of this list did some hardware hacking and successfully overclocked an emate..which is similar to a 130...so you might try there first:

Good luck....especially in finding a place to get the 5mHz xtals!

  Hi

I mainly use a messagepad 130, I have a 2000, eMate
and a 110, but I love the shape and size of the 130.
I know i cant use it for WiFi and all that stuff but is works
fine via a modem.

My question is has any one tried to over clock a 130?
I'm thinking of giving it a go using a 5MHz crystal as this
seems to be used to over clock eMates and 2x00s.

Will that crystal work or am I making a stupid choice by
tampering with my 130? If I use a bigger crystal like a 16MHz
will this make the 130 even faster or fry the chips?

Some advise would be much appreciated.

Sam

In this case I was trying for Engadget.com, and instead wound up at www.edgadget.com which appears to have lots of Newton software.
