Have you checked the status of your storage? Anything less than 1MB free is going to cause problems.
Sometimes, I discover I've accidentally changed the default location (for Mail V or otherwise) to my internal store... It becomes full and then I only find out after Mail V starts to have receiving/storage issues.
Also, try a reset of the mailboxes found in the Owner Preferences. This will then download all mail again. Sometimes that will help me get Mail V past a hiccup.
