Thanks so much for the detailed information Frank.

When I recently re-installed everything, the first thing I tried was
the configuration you mention - no WEP, a very short and simple SSID on
the router... and it just doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure it's the card at this point (and have found a Lucent
Silver on eBay) but I'm still open to suggestions!

BTW - the card I found on eBay is identified by the seller as "Lucent
Tech Orinoco Silver" -- does the "Orinoco" make a difference?
